FFL transfers are how rifles bought online reach their new owners legally. Federal law requires that firearms sold by licensed retailers across state lines are shipped to a Federal Firearms Licensee (FFL) near you rather than to your home. The dealer receives the rifle, runs the required background check and hands it to you once everything is approved. This guide explains exactly how FFL transfers work at Tombstone Tactical.

How FFL Transfers Work in 6 Steps
- Choose your rifle. Browse our Seekins rifles and add the one you want to your cart.
- Pick a local FFL. Call a nearby gun shop and ask if they accept transfers and what they charge. Most charge a modest fee.
- Check out. Add your FFL dealer’s name, address and phone number in the order notes at checkout.
- We ship to your dealer. We confirm the dealer’s license and ship your rifle insured, with tracking.
- Complete the transfer. Bring a valid government photo ID to the dealer, fill out ATF Form 4473 and pass the background check.
- Take it home. Once approved, the rifle is yours.
Who Can Buy a Rifle Online?
You must be at least 18 years old to buy a rifle from a licensed dealer under federal law, and you must not be prohibited from owning firearms. Some states and cities have additional rules, such as waiting periods, permits, magazine limits or restrictions on certain features. It is your responsibility to make sure the rifle you order is legal where you live. Your local dealer is a great resource for questions about state and local laws.
What Do FFL Transfers Cost?
Transfer fees are set by your local dealer, not by us. They vary from shop to shop, so it is worth calling two or three dealers. Some states also charge a background check fee. Ask your dealer for the total cost before you order so there are no surprises at pickup.
What Ships Without an FFL?
Scope rings, bases, mounts, rails, magazines and most AR parts ship straight to your door. Only the rifles themselves, and any receivers, require FFL transfers. Please check your local laws for magazine and accessory restrictions before ordering.
Tips for Smooth FFL Transfers
- Call your dealer before ordering to confirm they accept transfers and to ask about fees.
- Ask your dealer to email a copy of their FFL to us to speed things up.
- Use the exact business name on the dealer’s license.
- Bring a current ID with your current address when you pick up.
- Keep your order confirmation handy in case the dealer asks for it.
Common Questions About FFL Transfers
How long do FFL transfers take?
Once your rifle arrives at the dealer, the transfer itself usually takes less than an hour, although some states have waiting periods.
What if my background check is delayed?
Your dealer will explain the next steps. Delays are usually resolved within a few business days.
Can I change my FFL dealer after ordering?
Yes, as long as the rifle has not shipped. Contact us right away with the new dealer’s details.
